Luke Bonneville (pronouns: he/him) is a Registered Social Worker in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW). About Me
I have been passionate about equity and social issues from a very young age. I grew up in Eastern Ontario and made the move out to Southwestern Ontario in 2016.
In my career, I have worked with children and adults with developmental disabilities in various capacities, with adults withdrawing from substances in early stages of recovery in institutional settings, in the child welfare system and in a public school board.
I currently live in Cambridge with my family and my child, who is adopted. In my spare time, I am an avid reader and love being outdoors, especially during the summer. My happy place is in the forest or curled up on the couch during a thunderstorm.
I am passionate about supporting families in exploring their pathway to adoption. I provide information and education to prospective adoptive parents who are curious about the next steps for their family. I have a special interest in working with gender non-conforming prospective adoptive parents, and LGBTQIA+ families.
Trainings & Qualifications
I am a relatively new Approved Adoption Practitioner, obtaining my approval in 2024 after 1.5 years of intensive training through the MCCSS’s mentorship program. Prior to this, I was a prospective adoptive parent myself. Given my personal and professional background in the adoption world, I am passionate about helping others through private adoption practitioner services, and to better understand the current landscape in private adoption.
I have training and qualifications as a Registered Social Worker in the province of Ontario, completing the 4-year Bachelor’s Program and continuing on to complete my Master’s of Social Work. During my Master’s degree, my focus during my Major Research Paper was the experiences of trans and gender-nonconforming teenagers interacting with social services in Ontario.
In my career, I worked in child welfare for approximately four years before moving to therapy-based positions, first as a school-based social worker and later owning my own private practice. I am currently the Clinic Director of Becoming Therapy, a private practice in Cambridge. If you are interested in booking a therapy appointment for yourself or your child, please visit my sister website, www.becomingtherapy.ca.
In my life, I have worked intensively with a variety of children and teenagers experiencing a wide range of mental health and addictions problems. I focus on supporting parents to understand and appreciate developmental stages and to strengthen their attachment with young people. These skills come in handy in preparing families for adoption.
Approach to Adoption Work
I am a caring and compassionate man with a straightforward and informative approach to my work. Working with an adoption practitioner is a long-term relationship that spans many years, so it is important that we both feel we are a good fit for one another before moving forward. For this reason, I ask for us to meet one another so we can get to know one another before moving forward.
Personality-wise, I am thoughtful and kind, while also being direct and to-the-point when needed. It is important to me to provide current, updated information and the latest research pertaining to adoption.
If you are thinking about working with me, I require a paid, two-hour consultation to discuss whether adoption is the right fit for you. Becoming an adoptive parent is a specialized role and is very different than having a child born to you for many reasons.
Please connect with my assistant below to schedule a consultation appointment if you are interested in working together, or if you have more questions. I hope to hear from you soon.
