About Me
I have been passionate about equity and social issues from a very young age. I grew up in Eastern Ontario and made the move out to Southwestern Ontario in 2016.
In my career, I have worked with children and adults with developmental disabilities in various capacities, with adults withdrawing from substances in early stages of recovery in institutional settings, in the child welfare system and now work in a public school board.
I currently live in Cambridge with my husband and my dog, Molly. In my spare time, I am an avid reader and love being outdoors, especially during the summer. My happy place is in the forest or curled up on the couch during a thunderstorm.
I am passionate about adoption and recently welcomed my son into my home. I am current exploring professional opportunities to offer adoption consultation services.
Trainings & Qualifications
I am passionate about offering quality psychotherapy services to children and adults in my private practice. Thank you for visiting my website.
As stated on the main page, I have training and qualifications as a Registered Social Worker, completing the 4-year Bachelor’s Program and continuing on to complete my Master’s. My focus during my Major Research Paper was the experiences of trans and gender-nonconforming teenagers interacting with social services in Ontario.
I am currently a school social worker, which has allowed me to expand my skills and knowledge and work intensively with a variety of different children and teenagers facing different problems.
Most recently, I have completed WRAP Facilitation Training (2014) focussing on mental health recovery, a 12-week CBT Fundamentals course (Level 1) through Wilfred Laurier University (2019), the Modular Approach to Therapy with Children (MATCH) protocol for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (2020), and the STRONG protocol for Newcomer Groups (2021). I have recent training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and certifications in trauma-based practices (2020) and online therapy modalities (2021) to strengthen my interventions with children and adults during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Counselling Approach
I start counselling with the belief that there are many structural barriers at play for my clients that have a direct impact on their mental health. This was a focus of my academic training at the University of Ottawa and informs the ways that I work with clients. Colonialism, racism, poverty, homophobia, ableism, and other structural inequities shape why clients may experience distress or discomfort in their lives and seek out counselling. I attempt to develop this larger-scale understanding of problems in my practice, while integrating validated and evidence-based clinical approaches that teach individual strategies. With this lens, I hope to improve outcomes for my clients in accompanying them through life’s challenges, finding new ways to cope.
I use several different modalities during my counselling sessions, that can vary according to the client and the nature of the problem. For instance, I use motivational interviewing and the stages of change model to help people who are stuck making progress on their goals. I might use CBT or DBT techniques to work on feeling better, to learn relaxation and distraction techniques for anxiety, or to reframe thoughts that are causing panic, fear, or loneliness. Every person is different and a flexible approach can often be helpful to find the best fit for you.
Please feel free to connect with me to book a free consultation to see if I would be a good fit.
